Newcastle University win the ICCA-OUP 2022 Mooting Competition

After a two year wait, we are delighted the final of the prestigious OUP & the ICCA National Mooting Competition was held in-person and hosted by The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.

After many months of mooting virtually, the four finalists – from Birkbeck, University of London, Cardiff University, University of Bristol and Newcastle University – were finally able to look their opponents in the eye as they put their case to The Rt. Hon. Lady Justice Andrews.

“The mooting at this final was of an exceptionally high standard and you should all be very proud of your achievement. I would be happy to hear the same quality of legal argument in the Court of Appeal anytime.”

The Right Honourable Lady Justice Andrews

The final

The competition began in October 2021 with 64 starting teams, and played out in a knock-out style competition.

On Tuesday 14th June, there were a mix of familiar and fresh faces: Birkbeck, University of London were back after competing last year in the virtual final where they narrowly missed out to The Open University, while Newcastle University last won the competition in 2005. It was great to see Cardiff University and the University of Bristol progress to the final this year – and we hope to see all teams again for 2022/2023 competition.

The prizes

The winning students were presented with a £1,500 team prize, a trophy each, and the opportunity to marshal an Old Bailey Judge and enjoy lunch at the Inns of Court.

Special thanks

OUP and the ICCA would like to thank everyone who took part, both in front and behind the scenes throughout the competition. Organising moots, prepping their case, and showing impressive advocacy skills, our finalists are also to be congratulated in earning their place in the 2021-22 final.

Our special thanks go to Lady Justice Andrews DBE for presiding over the final competition, and to our moot writer Tim Goodwin who supplied nuanced and topical moot problems throughout.

We are also very grateful for the generosity of The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple for hosting this year’s final mooting competition.
