The Inns of Court College of Advocacy, ICCA (formerly the ATC) visited Guernsey to deliver a short advocacy training course to members of the Bar on the 6th & 7th February 2016. The ATC party comprised of Mrs Justice Andrews , Anesta Weekes QC, Michael Lerego QC, Iain Morley QC, HHJ Patrick Thomas QC, Stephen Lloyd, Neil Chawla & HH John Samuels QC.
The training included plenary sessions on the importance of advocacy, case preparation and analysis, narrative advocacy and an introduction to and demonstration of the Hampel Method. Participants were then split into breakout groups, each led by 1 ATC trainer, where they focused on the techniques of examination in chief and cross examination.
The training finished with the delivery of an ethics session, where 4 ethical scenarios, which reflected the most common disciplinary problems experienced by the local Bar were discussed. The training was very well received and the hosts have expressed an interest in receiving similar rounds of training in the future.
