Why choose the ICCA Bar Course?

Funded by the Inns of Court and designed by experienced practitioners and legal academics, the ICCA Bar Course is focussed on developing the highest calibre of new generation barristers.

The Vocational Stage of Bar training, formerly referred to as the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), was reformed in 2019 following the long Future Bar Training consultation.   The following year, in 2020, the ICCA became an Authorised Education and Training Organisation (AETO) and launched the Bar Course, becoming the first provider to be approved by the BSB.

Here are five reasons you should choose the ICCA Bar Course to secure success in pupillage and a career at the Bar.

We have strong links to the profession which means you will:

  • benefit from visiting guest lectures, seminars and workshops from senior practitioners and the judiciary spanning a diverse range of practice areas
  • have the opportunity to earn one of the many Chambers-sponsored awards for modules on both parts of the Bar Course enabling successful students to enhance their CV, access one-to-one mentoring and gain mini-pupillage experience
  • our awards are generously sponsored by sets such as Red Lion Chambers and Falcon Chambers. Our recent essay-writing competition was sponsored by Keating Chambers and the Guardian Newspaper
  • access placements with ‘Advocate’ and ‘JUSTICE’ through our Careers programme and take part in one of the many internal and external moots via our selected Advocacy Committee members.

Our teaching takes place within the precincts of the Inns of Court which means you will:

  • share your environment with members of the profession every day
  • benefit from first-class training facilities
  • have easy access to the Inns’ world-class libraries as a place of private study and research
  • be able to dine in Hall and at the Inns’ bars enjoying Bar student discounted rates.

As a charity, we are focussed on quality and developing the highest calibre of new generation barristers:

  • The ICCA Bar Course is validated by King’s College London
  • The course is designed by practitioners and legal academics who, combined, hold over 130 years’ experience at the Bar
  • We have designed complementary learning outcomes and supporting materials to provide a high academic experience for all students
  • We offer 9 academic and module prizes, comprising opportunities for mini-pupillage and one-to-one mentoring as well as small cash awards.

  • All in-person teaching is delivered in small groups of no more than 12. All advocacy and conference classes are in small groups of no more than 6. You will receive individual one-on-one time with your tutor.
  • We have been awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the Bar Council for our commitment to the wellbeing of our students and bespoke materials are embedded into the ICCA Bar Course. All our students have access to counselling services via Health Assured.
  • Our Fair Admissions Policy is designed to encourage students from all backgrounds; applications are measured against fair and transparent criteria, and all admissions staff are fully trained in fair and inclusive admissions practices.

We work with you to secure pupillage:

  • 75% of the ICCA’s graduating cohort of 2021 have pupillage, having either applied for pupillage in 2021 or who already had a pupillage on enrolment
  • You will have access to our experienced Directors of Careers for one-to-one help with reviewing your pupillage applications
  • You can apply to join the Advocacy Committee and take part in internal and external mooting competitions to enhance your advocacy skills and build your CV
  • Our Careers Hub contains a wealth of advice on the interview process and specialist practice areas.

We offer two start dates each year, September and January

We are competitively priced

  • We offer a flexible payment schedule for Part Two
